The story of Francis O. Patthey,
founder of GRUPO INCA, INCALPACA & KUNA

This story is one of constant growth, even in the midst of adversity.

It's been a long journey, starting with Patthey & Corzo in 1957 and ending in 2010, when Francis O. Patthey came to Port Elizabeth, South Africa, to oversee a herd of about 10,000 mohair goats and their industrialization.

The beginning was anything but easy. Together with Mr. Hugo Corzo Morales, hard work was done for many years. If Francis O. Patthey can take any credit, it is that he founded the Inca Tops company in 1964. At that time, the goal and need of underdeveloped countries like Peru was to add value to their own raw materials and not export them as such to be industrialized later in the Northern Hemisphere.

Francis O. Patthey was the first to succeed in processing the alpaca fibers with the correct classification, washing and combing, and then transforming them into tops and yarns and then making knitwear, fabrics and clothing from them.

GRUPO INCA's activity has expanded over the years to other sectors such as agribusiness, hospitality, tourism, services and real estate. Likewise to initiatives taken over and managed by the generations following Francis O. Patthey, with the collaboration of an excellent team of managers with great experience, imagination and professionalism, as well as the efficient and loyal work of all employees.

I think my adventurous spirit brought me to Peru, I came here from my native Switzerland, back in 1950. I am an accountant by profession, this allowed me to learn about various business activities in Arequipa, a city in the South of Peru, where I settled down, raised a beautiful family and discovered the world of the alpaca, to which I still belong to.

Today, a world concerned about the environment and its sustainability has the opportunity to know and understand the importance of alpaca in this process. I want to present the WHY ALPACA concept, which will allow many people to understand the contribution of the Alpaca Value Chain to the environment and its sustainability.

We have come a long way. We founded PAC with Mr. Hugo Corzo in 1957 when we began the marketing of alpaca fibre in the international market. A few years later, we defined our business vision: Grow forward by adding value to the alpaca fibre and generating many jobs. In 1964, Inca Tops was created for the manufacture of alpaca tops and yarns. At the beginning of the 80’s, Condor Tips was founded, producing high quality alpaca fibre fabrics and two years later Tumi Knits was founded to produce sweaters, mainly made of alpaca. Later, in 1996, it was decided to merge both companies and Incalpaca was born.

A milestone in our history was the participation in the protection and recovery of the vicuña through the International Vicuña Consortium founded in 1994, together with two of the most prestigious Italian textile firms.
Today we are the only Peruvian company that manufactures a variety of garments made of Vicuña, fully processed in our facilities with high quality standards.

The quality of our products was recognized internationally, so we decided to venture into the retail business. Our Alpaca 111 chain of stores was born in 1987, the first store of alpaca products in Peru. Later, in 2007, it became KUNA, the most important chain of alpaca products at an international level. We currently have more than 35 stores in Peru and Chile, and are in the process of franchising the brand globally and entering into e-commerce.

We wish to mention our new brand ANDEAN, with which we offer alpaca products oriented to younger markets, and AMANO, premium Vicuña and Royal Alpaca yarns for hand knitting.

Pacomarca, our experimental farm with more than 2,500 alpacas located in the Puno Region, the most important alpaca-producing zone in the world at 4,100 m.a.s.l., deserves special attention.

For more than 15 years we have been recording the characteristics of our herds and their fibre. Today we have a database of more than 7 million records, through which, and with the support of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, we are obtaining important findings.

We were important pioneers in the transfer of embryos; we also developed shearing systems and qualityoriented purchasing policies, seeking to benefit alpaca breeders and the whole value chain. In a decade, we increased the percentage of baby alpaca in the fleeces acquired from producers from 12% to more than 23%, and introduced the Royal Alpaca quality of 18.50 microns.

Through Pacomarca, we have two great objectives which will benefit all breeders:

1. To increase the quantity of Royal Alpaca and introduce to the market the Imperial Alpaca quality of 16 microns.

2. Recovery the production of colour alpaca, especially black. 50 years ago the production colour fibre was 60 to 70 %, today is no more than 25%.

I would like to thank the team of people from the Technical and Commercial areas of the Grupo Inca who participated in the preparation of this valuable document: WHY ALPACA, which seeks to support and promote a unique tribe of people who care about the environment and its sustainability and know that Alpaca is a lifestyle.

Finally, I want to conclude by reminding you to always put passion into your life. Francis O. Patthey

Developments & achievements over time

Learn about the history of GRUPO INCA, INCALPACA & KUNA over the years.

PATTHEY & CORZO

Mr. Francis O. Patthey and Mr. Hugo Corzo Morales, convinced promoters of the virtues of alpaca fiber, founded Patthey & Corzo in Arequipa, which would become the cornerstone of what is currently GRUPO INCA. Their entrepreneurial vision and great perseverance allowed them to successfully commercialize this fiber in the markets of Europe, the United States and Asia.

INKA-TOPS

A new stage would arrive in our history with the formation of Cía. Textil Peruano Suiza S.A., currently called Inca Tops, whose primary objective was to add value to the alpaca fiber and convert it from raw product to a fine yarn.Brands: Amano and Pacomarca

CÓNDOR TIPPS E INDUTRIAL TUMI

Market changes motivated our founders to continue driving the development of the Peruvian textile industry forward. Thus, at the beginning of the 1980s these new companies were dedicated to the manufacture of fabrics and sweaters, respectively. Now merged, they form Incalpaca TPX.

AGROINCA PPX

Near the end of the 1980s, whilst the country was living through the brutality of terrorism and the ravaging of its economy, we tenaciously insisted on finding new opportunities in the face of adversity. Thus, began a sustained growth into the agro-industrial sector with the creation of Agroinca PPX, dedicated to the production of fruit, under the brand Frutandina.

INTI RAYMI

The difficult years continued, but the innovative force and the desire to generate more jobs kept us steady. This vision resulted in Inti Raymi, a company that provides, amongst others, accounting, tax, legal, intellectual property advice, human talent management and corporate social responsibility services, to the companies of our Group and also to third parties.

VICUÑA

Cóndor TIPS was the first Peruvian company authorized to commercialize Vicuña fiber, shearing live animals to make garments and commercialize them on an international level.

COLCA LODGE

Globalization consolidated our great dream to make the treasures of Peru known and admired by the world. Thus, we ventured into the tourism sector, investing in the Colca Lodge hotel project, directing tourism towards the Colca Valley. Later the travel agency Colca Explorer would join this initiative.

 INCALPACA TPX

Incalpaca would arrive following the merger of Cóndor TIPS and Industrial Tumi. We currently have five production lines: fabrics, knits, accessories, plain weave garments and home line.

Brands: Kuna, Andean and Incalpaca

AMAZON EXPLORERS

Passion for exploration and the environment runs through our veins, which is why Amazonas Explorer was born at the end of the 1990s, focused on adventure tourism. It operates from the city of Cusco and covers tours and adventures throughout Peru.

PACOMARCA

We love Alpacas, a passion that after years of searching, led us to Puno, where we created the Fundo Pacomarca, the first alpaca breeding and genetic recovery center. Today we are very proud of the development of “Black Alpaka”, which boasts the largest herd in the world, with approximately 800 animals and produces 100% natural black colored fiber, knits and garments which are commercialized internationally. Inca Tops is the company that carries out these important programs.

EKEKO

Taking advantage of the boom in tourism in Peru, we inaugurated a shopping center -half a block from the Plaza de Armas (main square) of Arequipa, specializing in the sale of handicrafts including works from all of the different regions of Peru. In order to complete the tourist concept in said property, we opened the Ekeko Restaurant which was later expanded to several points throughout the city. Today, this Peruvian grill restaurant is present in various shopping centres in Arequipa.

 KUNA

After our experience with our Alpaca 111 stores, Kuna was born. This brand took the lead and allowed Incalpaca to enter the retail business with greater force. We currently have stores in Peru and Worldwide.Using a refined selection of vicuña, guanaco and alpaca, each Kuna garment has the softness of the very finest fiber available.

AWARDED

In March 2010, Incalpaca (the parent company of KUNA) received an award for exemplary social responsibility in Latin America from the prestigious Mexican Center for Philanthropy (CEMEFI).

CAJA INCASUR

At the beginning of the millennium envisaging the emerging economic growth of Peru, we invested in the microfinance sector, creating Collagua Inversiones y Desarrollo, a company, which, after several years, became the Caja Rural de Ahorros y Créditos Incasur (Caja Incasur). The idea was not only to attend the financial needs of the workers of GRUPO INCA, but also of the population of the Arequipa region.

PACHAMAMA-Gourmet

With this company, our participation into the gastronomic world expanded. Beside Ekeko, the brands that represent us are: La Catalina, Cocina Central, Don Calletano, Native & Natural and Peruvian Taste, all focused on providing the best gastronomic experiences. The Production Center or Main Kitchen boasts state of the art technology and is the largest in Arequipa.

CARMEN INMUEBLES

With the continuing development of the Arequipa region, GRUPO INCA enters the real estate world. This company is in charge of administering various properties belonging to GRUPO INCA, as well as, other properties throughout Arequipa, such as business buildings, warehouses, restaurants and multi-family housing. Nave, Singular and Carmen are the company’s flagship brands.

 ANANAE

A new investment, in the service sector, was made with the company Ananea, which initially focused on security and monitoring. It later incorporated automobile maintenance and theft prevention services, using dynamic technology available throughout these sectors.

KIPU-SOFTWARE

Kipu Software was born in 2021 and is using the name "Inka Labs" which has been present in Arequipa city since 2011. Our mission is to be leaders in the software development sector. To achieve this, we have brought together a "dream team" of dedicated and passionate professionals.

On April 19, 2021, Don Francis passed away in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, at the ripe old age of 93
We will always remember one of his favorite phrases that expressed the special relationship he had with our country:

"Peru is the country that allowed me to turn my fantasy into reality and, thanks to its people, to turn that fantasy into reality."
