To determine the fineness of the fiber or wool of an alpaca, the diameter of the animal's hair is always measured. The finer the individual hair, the higher the quality of the clothing and the softer it feels. With alpaca, there are different grades of fineness. We use only fibers from the finest alpaca natural hair classes for our design garments: Baby Alpaca and Superfine Alpaca.

The fineness of alpaca fibers from Peru is measured in "microns" or micrometers. For our wool qualities, we exclusively process alpaca hair with a fineness of 19 to 27 microns, which corresponds to a fineness of 0.019 to 0.027 millimeters. One of the many advantages of alpaca fiber lies in this beautiful fineness. For comparison, human hair has a thickness of 70 micrometers. Significantly higher than sheep's wool, which is measured at about 30 or 40 microns for the finest fibers.

We recommend washing the clothes or garments by hand, so you can enjoy them for a long time. The ideal is to wash the item in cold water with a gentle wool detergent. Always dry it lying down afterward to avoid deformation.

Alpaca wool is naturally hypoallergenic and self-cleaning, so regular washing is not necessary. Simply hang it up to air, and odors and wrinkles will disappear by themselves.

Our alpaca wool comes from the high mountains of Peru. Our alpacas live mostly in small family herds of 50 to 100 animals in the Peruvian Andes. There are thousands of small farmers who live from alpaca breeding, care for their animals and keep them outdoors all year round.

The shearing traditionally takes place once a year in Peru per animal and lasts only a few minutes. Afterward, the fibers are manually selected by hand according to color and fineness. This traditional selection is a demanding craft that only a few people have mastered. Our alpaca wool is further processed in our production facilities in Cusco, Arequipa, and Lima in Peru. Here we guarantee fair wages, secure jobs, and above-average social security.

The finest fibers are then classified into fineness classes, with each hair fiber assigned to a specific fineness class. We only use the fibers of the Baby Alpaca and Superfine Alpaca fineness grades, both of which are particularly soft and light. The small merino portion of our sock wool comes from sheep from Uruguay that is sheared mulesing-free.

They live only at altitudes between 3700 and 5000 meters, so their wool has an incredible fineness of 13-15 microns! No animal fiber has fewer microns. The Merino sheep is a fine-wooled breed of sheep whose name goes back to the Berber dynasty of the Merinids. Merino wool is not quite as fine as alpaca but has similar thermal properties for a comfortable, soft feel in both cold and heat. The merino wool in our alpaca sock wool is of the finest Superwash quality. Superwash is a polymer finish that makes the hairs in the yarn even smoother.
